Demystifying AI: Critical Approaches to Engage with Technology In-Person
The emergence of AI is another example of a technology which disrupts and complicates our relationship with our work. Silicon Valley is pushing for AI to take up more and more work, and consume more and more resources, but who does this benefit? Technologies do not exist in a vacuum, they augment and perpetuate systems of power which privilege certain people, groups, and ideas over others. We must be able to actively choose how and when a technology can affect our lives, and to do so, we must take critical approaches to appraise the benefits and detriments of AI.
Participants will:
- Explore the historical examples of technological interventions in human work to contextualize the development and implementation of artificial intelligence
- Identify key features and issues regarding the functionality of AI
- Learn and apply theoretical models to interpret the impact, function, and political economy of AI and broader technologies
- Create a set of personal AI morals through reflective exercises and dialogue
