Activating Archives Through Co-investigation: University of Calgary Archival Residency Project - A Look Back On Year One In-Person
This presentation will introduce the process and outcome of the first year of the Archival Residency Project (ARP) at the University of Calgary: a pedagogical experiment in the creative activation of archival materials. Sponsored by a grant from the Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning, ARP is a three-year project with each year supporting a student researcher to respond to a pre-selected archival fond from UCalgary’s Archives and Special Collections. The collective of library/archive staff and student have approached the project as co-investigators, exploring how academic institutions can facilitate a collaborative approach to supporting student research in archives. The first year was launched to celebrate the pioneering Canadian composer, broadcaster and arts administrator Norma Beecroft, whose work investigated new ways of composing and performing music, particularly through her work with technology. Composition graduate student Shea Iles was selected through an open call to University of Calgary students. This presentation will express the experience of the past year of this project, incorporating musical elements, reflections, and findings.
