[ONLINE] Text and Data Mining with the Digital Scholar Lab Online
Text mining is a research technique that utilizes computational analysis to uncover patterns in large text-based datasets or extensive collections of written resources, particularly in the Humanities. The Digital Scholar Lab, available through the University of Calgary Library, is a cloud-based program that enables users to perform text analysis and create visualization tools with no prior programming knowledge required. Users can publish their outputs with confidence, retaining all intellectual property rights, and are free to share analysis outputs.
Join Gale Trainer, Becky Sowers, in a hands-on workshop designed to introduce the benefits of using text and data mining (TDM) in research and the classroom. Learn how the Digital Scholar Lab can help users identify themes and patterns through both distant and close reading of primary source documents. In this workshop, you will familiarize yourself with the Lab by applying at least one analysis tool to a curated content set and examining the results. We will also highlight specific tools built into the Lab that promote collaboration and proper research methodology. Instructors will leave this workshop with ideas for how the Lab can be used for student assignments and research, from ideation to publication.
