Opening reception - Teresa Posyniak: Resilience

Opening reception - Teresa Posyniak: Resilience In-Person

Resilience, curated by Michele Hardy and Christine Sowiak, explores Teresa Posyniak’s long and varied career as an artist, activist and educator in Calgary. Working with a variety of media, Posyniak explores issues close to her heart and family– issues related to women’s bodies, motherhood, the environment, trauma, loss and resilience. With works drawn from throughout her long career, Resilience will explore the intimate connections between her sculptural and painted works. It will feature a monumental installation as well as a number of works never exhibited before.

Teresa Posyniak is a Calgary-based artist with degrees in literature and drama, a BFA in painting and printmaking, and an MFA in sculpture (University of Calgary, 1983). Over the course of her 40+ year career, she has worked in materials as diverse as steel, wood, concrete, handmade paper and felt, oil and encaustic. Her works explore themes of vulnerability and resiliency in contemporary society. Posyniak has always been a socially engaged artist and her activism, primarily on behalf of women, children and the environment, drives her practice.

She has taught art at the Alberta University of the Arts and the University of Calgary, and her work has been exhibited widely in private and public galleries. Posyniak has been the recipient of many awards and grants from the Alberta and Saskatchewan governments as well as The Canada Council. Her work is represented in many private and public collections including the Glenbow, The City of Calgary Civic Art Collection, and The Alberta Foundation for the Arts. Posyniak is represented by Christine Klassen Gallery.
