[ONLINE] From Compilers to Co-Creators: Historical Perspectives on Generative AI and the Future of Literary Studies Online

Description: This session explores how, under the Ancien Régime, French literary adaptation and scholarly compilation can inform current discussions about generative AI and the future of literary studies. Drawing on La Fontaine’s adaptive poetics and Du Halde’s compilation of Jesuit knowledge about China, we examine continuities and differences between earlier forms of mediated authorship and contemporary human–AI collaboration. These case studies offer a historically grounded perspective on emerging questions of originality, disciplinary literacy, authorship, and knowledge production in the age of GenAI.
