[In-Person] AI & Writing: Citations, Attributions, & Transparency - Workshop #3 In-Person

This workshop explores how artificial intelligence (AI) intersects with academic writing practices, with an emphasis on responsibility, attribution, and transparency. Participants will examine the importance of being clear about their use of AI tools, consider strategies for taking ownership of AI-generated outputs, and review approaches to citing AI across different citation styles. The session will also address emerging perspectives on AI transparency statements, encouraging participants to think critically about evolving academic norms and ethical expectations surrounding AI in scholarly communication.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of transparency in documenting the use of AI in academic writing.
  • Take responsibility for AI-generated content by evaluating its accuracy, appropriateness, and ethical implications before use.
  • Apply current citation guidelines and conventions to appropriately credit the use of AI tools across different styles.
  • Develop an AI transparency statement that communicates clearly and ethically how AI tools were incorporated into their work.

This workshop is open to all members of the University of Calgary community and is not part of a research study. Anyone may attend the workshop without participating in any research.

After the workshop, you will be invited to take part in a separate, voluntary research study. This study involves a short, 10 optional question survey about your learning experience. The survey is part of a project on AI literacy and the use of AI in supporting information literacy skills, which has received ethics approval from the University of Calgary Conjoint Faculties Research Ethics Board.

Your participation in the survey is entirely voluntary and independent of the workshop. Choosing not to complete the survey will not affect your ability to attend the workshop or access library services. Survey responses will be anonymous and may be included in publications or presentations about the project.
