[ONLINE] When AI Feels Human: Chatbot Risks, AI Literacy and the Protection of Young Users Online

Description: AI chatbots are designed to feel human - and young people are increasingly turning to them as companions, confidants, and sources of advice. This raises an important question: when these interactions cause harm, who is responsible - and how should responsibility be shared?

Drawing on my current research on minors and conversational AI, this presentation explores emerging risks associated with AI chatbot use and examines how Canada and China are responding through different legal and regulatory approaches. It looks beyond the question of who is responsible: AI companies, parents and guardians, users, or public authorities to ask how these actors depend on one another to prevent and respond to harm.

The presentation will be especially relevant to researchers, educators, students, legal and policy professionals, parents, and others interested in youth, AI, online safety, and the changing relationship between humans and technology.

No legal or technical background is required, and the presentation will be followed by an open discussion.

Presenter Bio: Jiaxue Jin (Eleanor) is a final-year LL.B. student at Fuzhou University and a visiting research student at the University of Alberta. Her research focuses on AI governance, online harms, platform responsibility, and the protection of minors in their interactions with conversational AI. Her current project examines how legal responsibility for AI chatbot-related harms is structured across Canada and China, with particular attention to risk identification, institutional accountability, and the role of AI literacy in protecting young users.
